Portugal

Herdade Da Farizoa – Portugal

Herdade Da Farizoa

The property's origins are unknown, or rather, have been lost to history. It is known however, that during the 18th and part of the 19th century it belonged to one of the many religious orders that ceased to exist by the year 1854. Herdade da Farizoa possesses an ancient group of buildings, including a convent, in which references to a past winegrowing tradition can be found. In one of the convent’s underground rooms there is a wine cellar, and a still-visible exterior brace for the famous “talhas” [pitchers] used in the 19th century winemaking process. Herdade da Farizoa is located in the civil parish of Terrugem, in Elvas county, and is part of the Borba subregion, which is one of the three that comprises the Alentejo Demarcated Region. Very dry, hot summers and springs are characteristic of this region’s climate. The annual precipitation levels are low, around 400 mm, precipitation which mostly occurs during the winter months. The sunlight exposure values are very high, particularly during the quarterly period preceding the grape harvest, thus contributing to a perfect ripening of the grapes and to the quality of the wines, which Rober Parker has recognized with scores in the 90s, making these wines an incredible value given the undeniable quality.

At Herdade da Farizoa, one can find some of the grape varieties most representative of the Alentejo region:

Aragonez, which is a high-quality variety, rich in tannins, and which produces fruity wines (cherry and blackberry), full of colour and very aromatic, and Trincadeira, which is one of the oldest and most commonly used varietals in Alentejo, where the arid conditions allow for the production of strong, rich red wines, with red fruit, floral, and green herbal notes.
Combining these with other Alentejo varieties, Herdade da Farizoa produces wines of an exceptional quality, ideal for accompanying meat and cheese dishes.

Mar de Frades – Spain

VOLTEO WINERY

In the far northwest corner of Spain, the Rias Baixas (low rivers) is located in lush, verdant Galicia. It is an exceptionally beautiful wine region, also making some of the best white wines Spaiin produces. Mar de Frades is a pioneering bodega in the area  and it is a fine producer of the star wine from Rias Baixas , Albarino.
Albariño is likened to both Riesling and Viognier, Riesling for its mineral character and Viognier for its bouquet of peaches and apricots. Many wine experts, including the legendary Miguel Torres, believe that Albariño is actually the Riesling grape and that the vines were brought over by medieval German monks who were establishing monasteries on the Camino de Santiago ( Saint James Way). The regulatory council in Rias Baixas disagree and believe that the Albariño grape is indigenous to the area of the border region that separates Spain from Portugal, where the grape is known as Alvarino. It produces a medium to light bodied white wine that is rich with peach and citrus fruits while the aromas tend to the floral and slightly nutty end of the spectrum. The wines have a bright acidity and an easy drinking quality that has propelled them to new heights of popularity.

The winery was handed down from one generation to the next until the year 1966, when Ramon Bilbao Pozo, the last of the descendants, died. In 1972 the business was converted into a corporation with new shareholders. New facilities were built, also in Haro. The new company wished to continue the work of its founder, Ramon Bilbao, and concentrated on making age worthy wines, enhanced by the care and know-how of people who love wine above all else. Toad Hollow Vineyards - California

Toad Hollow Vineyards

California Toad Hollow is a collaboration of two old friends who, more or less, retired to an existence of peace and quiet in the Hollow, after a life of whirlwind world travel. Neither of these two gentlemen believed in self-denial, and over the years had probably wined and dined at every major eatery and watering hole in the universe.
Dr. Toad and The Dancing Badger (as they were fondly called) were sitting on the veranda one day gazing out over Mr. Badger's beautiful hillside vineyards that ran from the banks of the Russian River clear up to the house. As the two old friends had in common a love of good food and fine wine, they agreed whatever the plan, it must honor food or wine. With Dr. Toad's infamous years in the restaurant business and Mr. Badger's keen palate and exceptional ability to make stellar wines, the two decided they would pioneer the making of world-class wines at affordable prices.
In light of the legend, please keep in mind that Toad Hollow wines are very seriously crafted from premium vineyards along the California Coast. Stellar wines at an affordable price.
