LAMMERSHOEK – South Africa

back

Lammershoek Winery :

Lammershoek is situated in the Aprilskloof valley of the Paardeberg. The first vineyards were planted in 1750. Paul and Anna Kretzel had the good fortune of purchasing the farm in 1995. In 2000 they renovated the existing cellar at Lammershoek and began producing wine under the Lammershoek label. Günther and Sieglinde Stephan are now partners.

At Lammershoek they are committed to creating wines that reflect the remarkable terroir of the Paardeberg. Their philosophy is one of sustainable farming, top quality fruit and minimal interference in the cellar. The result is truly outstanding and unique wine.

The vineyards are currently being converted to sustainable and organic farming with a focus on getting soil and vine in balance. No chemical fertilizer has been applied in 5 years with organic composting preferred.

Legend has it that the name Lammershoek, meaning "lamb's corner", originated from the fact that
ewes with their young lambs sought shelter in the forests surrounding the farm, when threatened by
the Black Eagle- in Cape Dutch called the "Lammervanger".

Lammershoek Roulette Blanc 2010

41% Chenin Blanc 37% Chardonnay 18% Viognier 4% Clairette Blanche

* John Platter Wine Guide - 5 stars

An example of the new "Mediterranean" white blends coming out of South Africa. White stone fruit aromas are predominant early upon opening. These subside as the typical old vine honeyed Chenin aromas push through once the bottle has been open a while. There is a strong core of natural acidity which will allow the wine to age very beautifully. Aged for 12 months in French oak then blended and placed in concrete tank for 5 months to age on its fine lees before being bottled, unfined and unfiltered. Our Chenin Blanc ranges from 45 - 65 years in age and is all bush-vine and farmed dry-land. Consequently the yield is low. The Chardonnay for the blend also comes from an old (40+ years) bush-vine vineyard called the “Bossieveld” (small bush field). The Viognier comes from a younger, trellised block and the yields are slightly higher.

*" OK, Winerunners, Our friend Roger wanders over with this bottle of Lammershoek Roulette. We've not seen this before, but by no means we account ourselves experts in SA wines. Holy sweet toodely doodles Mcfly. That was the best tasting out-of-the-bottle experience we've both had in a long time. Well done. Margo and Sean." April 2011.

Typical Swartland flavors dominate the nose of this wine, the spiciness of the climate and granite based soils showing through. A rich palate is complemented by the freshness that Carignan and Grenache bring to the wine. The components are kept separate and the wines are blended a few weeks prior to bottling but is not fined or filtered. Ageing Potential 6 – 10 years

Lammershoek Zinfandel Syrah 2008

62% Zinfandel, 27% Syrah,1% Cabernet Sauvignon 14.5% alc./vol

* 2009 John Platter Wine Guide - 4 stars

A blend unique in South Africa.

Initially spicy on the nose, followed by red cranberry fruit. Tasting in early 2010 reveals a soft entry with fruit dominating. The finish shows more spice and savoury tannins keeping the wine together and indicate good ageing potential.

Maturation in oak follows for 14 months. The Zinfandel is aged in 30% American (20% new) and 70% 2nd and 3rd fill French oak. The Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon components are aged in 2nd and 3rd fill French oak.

100% Syrah

* 2009 John Platter Wine guide - 4 stars
* 18/20 Jancis Robinson

* Wijnpers May/June 2008 - 5 stars, best Syrah tasted out of South Africa
* Andreas Larsson, The Wine Guide (Tasted Summer 2008 Edition) - My Top Picks (SA)
Since Lammershoek started producing the Syrah in 2002, each vintage has achieved four stars in the John Platter.

Typical Swartland Syrah. Spicy and meaty on the nose, firm and dense on the palate but with a fresh finish that lightens the wine and allows a long finish. The oak is well integrated and unobtrusive.
